SafeTool - Safety Design Process Support

Even though most people consider computers to be a desktop system most computer systems, or programmable electronic systems (PES), are so called embedded systems.  A PES may be used for controlling systems as different as consumer electronic, industrial machinery, airplanes and nuclear power plants. Faults occurring in these systems may have catastrophic consequences inflicting harm to environment and people. Furthermore, systems become more complex and are introduced into new appliance fields. Functional safety has become an important aspect of complex system development.

 

In order to achieve functional safety, standards have been elicited to guide industry. Such a standard is IEC 62061 for functional safety of machinery. This standard requires a structured process for system design. However, it has turned out that there is a need for tool support of this process since the standard is quite extensive. The scope of this project is to produce such a tool.
